Looking for a Long Acting Reversible Contraception solution?

Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) has been a hot topic in women’s health for some time now. There are a few options available and we encourage you to consider which option is best for you.

What advantage does LARC provide?
The main advantage of LARC its effectiveness isn’t determined by the user. Not everyone is a reliable pill taker and illness such as diarrhoea and vomiting can undermine the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill. Figures show that LARC is 20 x more effective than the pill.

What is LARC?
There are three types of LARC available; the implant (Implanon), IUD (Mirena) and injection (Depo).

IMPLANON [effective for 3 years]
Implanon is a small rod that sits under the skin of the upper arm. It lasts for 3 years, is over 99 % effective and can be removed easily at any time. Once removed you are immediately fertile again.

Mingara Medical uses a local anaesthetic to numb the skin prior to inserting and removing Implanon. Most women find the procedure much simpler than they thought it would be.

A disadvantage of Implanon is that 1 in 5 women will develop an annoying bleeding pattern. Mingara Medical can offer treatments to help with this side effect.

MIRENA [effective for 5 years]
The Mirena is sometimes called an IUD or a coil. It is a small device (much smaller than you might think), which is inserted into the uterus (womb). It lasts for 5 years and is over 99% effective. It can be easily removed and your fertility returns immediately.

This is also a highly recommended treatment for heavy, painful periods. A lot of women will stop having periods all together and if you still do have periods, they will be lighter and less frequent.

DEPO injection [effective for 12 weeks]
The Depo injection is also over 99% effective and is given via an injection into the buttock every 12 weeks. It can take up to a year for your fertility to return to normal after stopping treatment. Your periods may stop, be irregular or longer.

How much does LARC cost?
Less than you might think! Implanon and Mirena procedures performed at our surgery may cost less than the pill. This will vary by location.
