Skin Cancer

Some of the general practitioners consulting from the Mingara Medical Consulting Rooms offer a wide range of specialised skin cancer medicine. They value the importance of preventative medicine and considering the sunny, coastal environment we live in, they see this as a very important part of the medical services they provide. There are several doctors co-working at Mingara Medical who are highly trained in more complex procedures including skin grafts and local flaps.

Their specialised skin cancer services includes:

  • Complete skin checks with appropriate equipment.
  • A full range of further diagnostic services including punch and shave biopsies.
  • A small, in practice, theatre area suitable for a variety of skin procedures including excisions of skin cancers.
  • Skin grafts
  • Delayed closure of cancers (to ensure adequate clearance)
  • Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
  • Other treatment options including cryotherapy which is suitable for some skin cancers.
  • Advice on prevention and medical management of pre-cancerous and some skin cancers including topical prescription creams.

Several doctors have done advanced training with the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. Please check with the reception staff to get further information.

After your skin check, your doctor may recall you for a surgical procedure.

The cost of the procedure is based on Medicare skin-related item codes plus a gap fee (out-of-pocket expense). Your doctor will provide an estimated cost to our reception team, and you will receive a quote via text message. This message will include your total estimated cost, out-of-pocket expense, and expected Medicare rebate. While the total cost may vary on the day, your out-of-pocket expense will remain the same.

Medicare will process your rebate within two business days, depositing your rebate into the bank account linked to your Medicare card. To avoid delays, please ensure your bank details are up to date with Medicare.

You will receive a reminder text two days before your procedure. If you need to cancel, please do so at least 24 hours in advance to avoid cancellation fees.

Any out-of-pocket costs contribute to your Medicare Safety Net threshold, which may increase your rebate once you reach the annual limit. Once you reach this threshold, Medicare may offer higher rebates for eligible services for the rest of the calendar year. The Original Medicare Safety Net (OMSN) increases Medicare rebates from 85% to 100% of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee once your gap expenses reach the annual threshold. The Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) further reduces costs by covering 80% of out-of-pocket expenses after reaching its threshold, but some services have caps. More details about Medicare Safety Net thresholds and rebates are available here: https://www.mbsonline.gov.au/internet/mbsonline/publishing.nsf/Content/Factsheet-EMSN-1Jan2025
